Careys are looking for new leadership potential to head-up our Glasgow team as Associate Design Engineer. A subject matter expert in Temporary Works Design and Structural Engineering principles, the Associate Design Engineer is a critical part of the design delivery team.

Careys Design Team (CDT) are an in-house design engineering consulting service, offering leading edge services across our construction and digital engineering disciplines. CDT provide temporary works design and construction solutions that are simulated using construction animations and advanced building information modelling.

There is plenty of scope to diversify your skill-set and work on large-scale/complex projects, including sub and super-structure, enabling & infrastructure packages. The Role

This is a full-time/permanent role, reporting to the Engineering Director, with responsibility for producing complex temporary works designs and methodologies, whilst leading/mentoring the team.

Responsibilities include;

  • Construction engineering from feasibility and construction methodology development through to temporary works design, programming and logistics.
  • Deliver temporary works designs and construction solutions that are optimised for fast, low-cost and safe construction, from concept through to construction.
  • Carry-out detailed engineering calculations.
  • Produce reports, sketches and drawings (inc. AutoCAD).
  • Develop sequence constraint envelopes.
  • Support and allocate resource across multiple projects, delivering to deadlines.
  • Research new construction techniques and develop and test hypothesis.
  • Work collaboratively with other Associate Design Engineers to share insights that capitalise opportunities and identify areas of competitive advantage.

About You

  • Masters degree (MEng) or similar that meets the academic requirements for registration with IStructE.
  • Chartered Engineer through a recognised governing body.
  • Advanced understanding of engineering and structural principles in Concrete, Steel & Timber.
  • Sound understanding of geotechnical principles, including retaining walls and pile design.
  • Good knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Experience in Robot or ETABS, Wallap. Knowledge of Revit, or Tekla advantageous.
  • Ability to lead, manage, mentor and effectively transfer expertise to others.
  • Ability to present designs and complex engineering problems in a concise and simple manner so that non-engineers understand the main principles.
  • Highly developed organisational and time-management skills - proven ability to meet project deadlines, plan and prioritise workload and delegate effectively.


  • 40hour week. 8.30am to 5.30pm (1hr lunch), Monday-Friday.
