About the role

Reporting to the Head of Technology and Enterprise Architecture, the Data Engineer is one of the digital team’s critical function leads in delivering a data driven business aligned with our company’s vision. This new pioneering role is integral to the success of Careys 5-year strategic plan and goal to deliver digital transformation that drives business value and delivers a data strategy that enables our business units to achieve their objectives.

The primary purpose of the Data Engineer is to develop a data ecosystem that allows us to deliver data insights and improvements across all areas of the company. This senior role will support the development of the Carey Group's data strategy and have responsibility for managing the governance around data management and identifying the right technology solutions that will underpin the digital strategy.

This key role will work closely with the Chief Information Officer to deliver a data driven culture and mentor the business in the value of data insights, including sharing knowledge, insights and driving engagement with business leaders and coaching the current ICT team.

Key responsibilities

  • Pro-actively engage and mentor the business to identify opportunities for data insights and develop a data-driven culture.
  • Pro-actively engage with technology suppliers to innovate and pioneer new data opportunities.
  • Implement data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems.
  • Document source-to-target mappings.
  • Re-engineer manual data flows to enable scaling and repeatable use.
  • Support the build of data streaming systems.
  • Write Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) scripts and code to make sure the ETL process performs optimally.
  • Develop business intelligence reports that can be re-used and add value to the business.
  • Build accessible data for analysis.

About you

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Strong technical background and ability to identify the best approach for storing and managing data. Can create a data-environment that the analytics team can utilise to deliver new opportunities across the company.
  • In-depth practical experience with and expertise in designing, implementing, and supporting solutions in Azure and AWS and comfortable leveraging services such as EC2, Redshift, Lambda, Kinesis, and Batch.
  • Strong and proven experience with Python, detailed SQL knowledge, and be used to dealing with API services to ingest and process data.
  • Experience building or maintaining ETL processes, knowledge and experience in API development.
  • Experience and knowledge of the concepts and principles of data modelling and can produce, maintain and update relevant data models for specific business needs.
  • Knowledge of working with metadata repositories to complete complex tasks such as data and systems integration impact analysis.
  • Experience solving the types of problems in databases, data processes, data products and services.
  • Knowledge of designing, coding, testing, correcting and documenting simple programs or scripts under the direction of others.

An understanding of/experience in the below is preferred but not essential:

  • Understanding of security considerations in the development and deployment of Azure and AWS solutions.
  • Experience of supporting data users working with Python or R.

  • 37.5hrs per week (9.00am – 5.30pm Monday – Thursday, 8.30am-4.30pm Fridays)
