Head of Sustainability

Acting as the co-creator and key point of contact for sustainability across the business, the Head of Sustainability will lead the development, coordination, and monitoring of a Group-wide sustainability strategy - the golden thread of this vision.

The Role:

  • Support the business in the implementation and delivery of the Group Sustainability strategy (3C’s), with particular focus on tangible actions and metric setting and delivery.
  • Collate information from departments and business units in accordance with the Group Sustainability Strategy for reporting back to ExCo / the Board.
  • Liaise and collaborate with operational function leaders to ensure the appropriate application of resource and budget allocation/adherence.
  • Support operational teams as required to ensure the successful delivery of site-specific sustainability requirements.
  • Lead the ongoing Carbon Science Based Targets programme including management of external consultants as well as internal key stakeholders e.g. procurement and plant and fleet.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Social Value and Early Talent to ensure the social value offering of the business continues to progress.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for sustainability training and work alongside learning and development teams to ensure sustainability training is available across all levels of the business at both project and business management level.
  • Lead on the development of internal and external sustainability reporting ensuring our core values are maintained throughout.
  • Support sustainability input to business development & bids and project delivery / implementation for sustainable requirements (beyond compliance).
  • Build positive relationships with key external stakeholders and industry networks and represent Careys in sustainability matters at external forums and events e.g. Supply Chain Sustainability School, Concrete Zero, FIS Sustainability Leadership Forum.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the Groups existing management system and certifications such as FSC CoC certification.

The Head of Sustainability will report into the HSSQ Director but touches all aspects of the business and will work closely with the Board, Executive Committee and the Operational Directors.

About You:

  • Highly collaborative, influential and passionate sustainability leader and subject matter expert.
  • Previous accountability for owning, shaping and developing a sustainability strategy across all levels of an organisation.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to adjust to changing company demands.
  • Degree or equivalent level thinking and/or relevant qualifications/professional experience and association memberships.
  • Able to work in matrixed, cross functional ways and create highly accountable and engaged champions (experience dealing with a workforce of 1000+ preferred)
  • Strategic foresight – planning successful outcomes across a 3-5 year timeline
  • Skilled in data and trend analysis and translating these into recommendations/solutions through business cases and board papers/reports.
  • Skilled coach and mentor with previous experience in attracting, training and developing others.

  • Agile working arrangement (Offices/Sites/Home). This role requires the ability to attend our London regional offices 3 days a week as well as the ability/willingness to travel across our regional offices and sites nationwide.
