The Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Planning Engineer to join our London-based team, with a core focus on pre-construction/work-winning planning. Reporting to the Principal Planner, your role is to determine and develop the most suitable and economically viable construction and engineering methods for projects within your region (London and the South East).

Our planning function (circa 25 strong) is key to the success of our projects – planning and sequencing permanent works, logistics and temporary works for both pre-construction and live projects. As well as engaging project teams in BIM, we have developed and secured key partnerships with world-leading technology, educational and research bodies and are pushing the boundaries in helping to facilitate, influence and shape the vision and future of planning for our industry.  

Responsibilities include;

  • Development of Programmes: from first principles using quantities, outputs (production rates) and resourcing at task level to produce robust logic linked programmes aligned to the construction methodology. Quality checks and peer reviews/mentoring.
  • Operations: taking the tender programme through to delivery and monitoring against our contract baselines, with progress. Seeking opportunity and providing challenge, being the conscience of the project. Upskilling the wider project team in programmes. Communication of the plan in visual lookaheads.
  • Commercial acumen: firm working knowledge of NEC/JCT contracts alongside inputting to change control processes when working alongside the commercial and project management teams.  Advising teams on best practice.
  • Digital Engineering/BIM:  using the latest tools to view projects in 3D, extract quantities and produce 4D programmes (may be a development area where a keen interest lies). Visual lookaheads and using the tools available with the wider project teams.
  • Engineering: Solid engineering capability to that of Senior/Project Engineer level or beyond.  Understands buildability and logistical challenges in RC structures (Basements, sub and super structures) and/or Civils (drainage, infrastructure, earthworks, hard & soft landscaping). Able to understand design and preconstruction phases of a project.
  • Team Management/Upskilling: Supervising and upskilling/mentoring less-experienced team members. 

About You

  • Minimum 2 years site-based experience before moving into a planning role.
  • Demonstrable Engineering / Construction knowledge – best practice and evolving systems and solutions (e.g. offsite manufacture, slip form, jump form).
  • Proven planning and technical engineering/project management experience in relevant forms of construction (minimum 4 years).
  • Project controls experience including earned value analysis techniques. 
  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or Construction Management with experience in construction preferably in civil engineering or related sectors (preferred).
  • Working knowledge and experience of internal and client digital systems, specifically Asta and Primavera P6. (Careys use Asta Power Project Vision and the latest version of Primavera p6, hosted through oracle cloud). Experience of Power Bi would be beneficial, but not required.
  • Experience of using 3D and/or 4D models would be beneficial.
  • Excellent analytical, critical and logical thinking skills.
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to work to tight deadlines to meet agreed targets .  
  • Demonstrable experience of leading, inspiring, coaching and developing others .
  • Proven ability to build client relationships and to formulate, implement and direct successful planning strategies that maximise opportunities.
