Careys Civil Engineering has been named principal contractor for the upcoming, mixed-use Manchester development – The Residence. This project will play an important role in the extensive redevelopment of this thriving and historic industrial city in the north-west.

Two modern towers overlooking Manchester’s River Irwell and Greengate district

The Residence will comprise two towers – one rising to 15 storeys and the other to 35 storeys. Together they will create 300 residential properties and offer a gym, a ground-floor commercial unit and a private underground parking area.

Both buildings offer prime Manchester locations, in walking distance to Victoria train station and the regional city centre. The Greengate tower will feature views of the Greengate neighbourhood, which is a stone’s throw from the very heart of central Manchester, and the Irwell tower will overlook the River Irwell, which flows through the middle of the city.

Adopting a unique construction approach with significant benefits

As principal contractor for the enabling works on this exciting project, our significant responsibilities include bulk excavation works for the double basement, substructure works and the construction of the concrete superstructure.

In keeping with our consistent striving to deliver all of our projects exceptionally, we meticulously planned every element of our work on this development. Our thorough planning process enabled us to identify the most efficient methods and procedures to carry out this project.

We are implementing our M-tech jump form system to build the 35-storey superstructure of the Irwell tower. In addition, we are using a combination of different methodologies to erect the 15-storey superstructure of the Greengate building, including constructing the frame in full precast concrete.

We are one of the first in the UK to employ these construction methodologies in a parallel fashion. This innovative approach will help us to overcome the logistical challenges of the city centre location, complete our works on-time, in accordance with the project programme, and, most importantly, minimise health and safety risks substantially.
