Careys Civil Engineering delivered a wide range of contracts and services on the extensive Chiswick Park commercial development. Over a number of years, our site teams carried out demolition works, removed contaminated materials and asbestos from across the site, delivered extensive packages of enabling works, constructed roads and parking facilities, remodelled the park’s lake, developed significant areas of landscaping and public realm and delivered construction works on 6 of the 12 commercial buildings.

On Buildings 6 and 7, our teams delivered the enabling works, together with the construction of the sub and superstructures. Both buildings have 70m x 50m footprints, building 6 is nine-storeys and building 7 is twelve-stories, both buildings have an undercroft car park.

As part of the substructure package, we initially carried out the ground works and provided attendance on the piling works, followed by the installation of the drainage and construction of pile caps and ground beams.  The 2m deep base slab required in excess of a 1000m3 of concrete to be placed in a day, using three mobile concrete pumps.
Our team was responsible for the design and construction of the concrete frame and central core. The 52m high cores were slipformed to optimise the construction programme and negate the need to use a crane. This allowed the team to advance the cores at an average rate of 2m per day. This method of core construction also allowed the reinforced concrete corbels to be cast integrally, which, together with the 9m centred pre-cast columns, were used to support the post-tensioned concrete slabs and pre-cast edge beams.

The pre-cast edge beams were again designed to optimise the construction process and were lifted onto the deck ahead of the PT and reinforcement installation.  The slabs were supported using GASS tables that were flown between levels using the site’s three luffing cranes.

As well as being structurally important, the pre-cast columns were exposed and  served as an important architectural feature of each building. A great deal of effort was invested by our teams to develop appropriate formwork, mix designs and handling procedures to ensure that the concrete was produced to a consistent high quality of finish to meet the client’s exacting standards.

As part of our responsibilities on this project, our site team delivered a complete BIM strategy and delivery programme for principal contractor, Lendlease, and client, Stanhope.
