John, Tom and Pat Carey formed the business in 1969. Their vision, that is as strong today as it was nearly 50 years ago, was to build an exceptional business committed to delivering on its promises. John passionately believed in looking after and valuing clients and treating staff as though they were family.

That you can’t imagine the sheer scale in which the construction industry will grow and transform. When we started out in 1969 everything was done manually, there was little plant and fleet to assist with the works, most things were done by hand. Now technology has evolved, as has the complexity and scale of delivering projects, with services such as pre-construction advice and planning, temporary works design and CAD playing important roles, something we never dreamed of when we first started.

The reliability of plant and the trust that you can put in it now that you couldn’t in the early days. The other is the increased professionalism of the industry and the people in it.

It’s important to value your clients, deliver on your promises and if you say you’re going to do something, you should mean it and do it. Also, it is important not to over trade and get carried away – if you do hit a wall make sure you are able to continue to trade. Diversification is key, don’t put all your eggs in one basket and if you are making money make sure you put some aside for a rainy day.

A big turning point for me was back in the 1970s when we started working for a client doing three small jobs for them. We delivered them well and as a result they awarded us a 1,200 unit housing scheme. They are still a client today and I will always be proud of that.
