When did you join Careys, and in what role?
I joined Careys in 2018 as a Graduate Engineer at the TJX Head Office project in Watford.
What project do you work on at the moment?
I’m currently in Wimbledon on the Somerset Road site which is going to be indoor and outdoor practice courts for the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) once finished. We’ve done the Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame to house the indoor courts and are now doing the civils and hard and soft landscaping works which includes drainage, paving, planters etc.
What has been your favourite project to date and why?
My favourite project to date is definitely Wimbledon. I’ve been more involved and independent on this job, and it’s provided lots of new challenges. It’s also nice and scenic!
How did you decide on a career in construction?
I’ve always enjoyed being practical and so decided to study engineering at college and then went on to the University of Brighton to study civil engineering. Those choices ultimately led me to where I am today.
What’s your favourite thing about engineering?
I would say my favourite thing about engineering is the challenges it presents. Each day brings something new and it’s satisfying to be able to solve them and move on to the next one. Seeing a project come to life and knowing that you’ve contributed to the finished product also brings a great sense of satisfaction.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in engineering?
Be prepared to encounter new challenges and new obstacles every day. It’s no bad thing but it is something that you need to be open to and prepared for as an Engineer.
Which of the four Group values resonates with you the most and why?
Passion. It’s about putting the effort in every day and essentially loving what you do. I see it in the people I work with and the team around me and it’s definitely the value that resonates the most with me.
Is there a mentor(s) at Careys who has supported you in your career so far?
There’s three people. John Kearney who is the Project Manager here at Somerset Road who I’ve worked with since I joined Careys, and Tan, and Ravi Shankar who are both Engineers. All three of them have taught and guided me and I’m looking forward to discovering lots more from them – I’m always learning.
