When did you join Careys, and in what role?

I joined Careys in February 2018 as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

How did you decide on a career in construction?

To be honest I never sought construction out. After a chance encounter with some people from Careys one day, I was offered the opportunity to come in and interview. It was completely different to anything I had considered previously and so I took the chance explore an industry that I thought was never an option to me.

What project do you work on at the moment?

Durham History Centre.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities?

I’m currently managing my first site. My day-to-day tasks include measuring contract and tender drawings, pricing variations, collating quantities in preparation for valuations and application for payments, monitoring production of site progress, managing cashflow, ensuring costs are updated on COINS. All things money!

Is there a mentor(s) at Careys who has supported you in your career so far?

Chris Ward has been phenomenal in supporting me and contributing to my growth and development within Careys. He’s taught me a great deal, shown me so much patience, an eagerness to invest in me, and a willingness to share his expertise.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a similar career?

Take the opportunity. It’s a great field with so many prospects.

Finally, which of our four Group values resonates with you the most and why?

Authenticity resonates the most with me. I appreciate honesty and realism in life, they’re such important qualities and come at no cost! The culture at the Carey Group allows people to show their true colours, therefore allows individuals to enjoy working for the business.
