It is largely through the hard work and dedication of our employees that Careys is able to continue to achieve our business aims and objectives, maintain our strong culture and consistently deliver successful projects that live up to our high standards.

This week we caught up with Hire Desk Manager, Lloyd, from our Plant & Fleet division. The team schedules over 2,500 items of internal equipment made up of plant & fleet across our sites, and also have a valuable supply chain in place for the external hire side of the business, this placing Lloyd at the very forefront of our plant and fleet operations. Lloyd shares insights with us on his role, responsibilities and best moments at Careys.

My role and responsibilities

I joined the Carey Group back in 2007. My first job was site-based, working at the DLR Canning Town project. Then, in 2010, I began a new career path when I got the opportunity to work at Careys HQ in Plant & Fleet.

My day-to-day activities involve managing Careys internal plant, coordinating transport and overseeing the hire desk team and plant operators.

Deciding on a career in construction

I almost came across the industry by luck. After working in a family business for eight years, I decided to go travelling for a year. After returning home, I paid a visit to a careers advisor who pointed me in the direction of construction. I enrolled on a management, construction and engineering course. Then, fortunately for me, I got the start with Careys.

My favourite piece of equipment

I have no favourite as such – although I do like to see all Careys plant out of the yard, and I especially like to see all of the 360s working.

What I enjoy most about my role

To be honest, I like the pressure and the intensity of the role.

The busier the workplace is, the more I tend to enjoy it. When I get urgent phone calls, saying: “Lloyd I need your help!”, I enjoy the problem resolution part and being able to help the site teams out.

Interesting facts about the Plant and Fleet department

Accounts process over 5,000 plant invoices a month on our behalf, and plant hire manages more than 2,500 assets made up of plant and fleet.

Overcoming challenges

Every day, Careys project teams are faced with certain requests and/or challenges that end up on their doorsteps. My three years of site experience has helped me to understand what these teams are up against.

Whether you’re on site or based here at Wembley, you have to think and act quickly. You need to have the right people around you including good a reliable supply chain that you can trust and help get you out of testing situations.

Three words to summarise the culture at Careys

Proud, passionate, driven.
