Scudder Demolition was contracted to deliver several projects as part of the Carey Group’s role at Heathrow Airport. These have included works at Terminal 3, Terminal 5 and the Arora Hotel, and have entailed a combination of soft stripping, wire sawing, jacking, craneage, removal of partitions, break out of screed and removal of lifts and stairs.

Challenges were created by the logistics and close communication was required with all stakeholders and trades to ensure that we did not impact upon the live environment. Furthermore, we have implemented dust mitigation measures and worked at night to ensure that we do not affect travellers and impact upon their experience at the airport. All our operatives had the appropriate passes to carry out works and we ensured they were thoroughly prepared for working in a live airport environment.

Our team stripped out several retail units and demolished a steel frame. This enabled the new tenants to redevelop the terminal immediately afterwards. We also modified the existing Boots store to accommodate further retail unit space, requiring our team to undertake a full soft strip of ceiling grids, with works being carefully carried out above live services. The works also included removal of wall partitions, break out of screed and removal of lifts and stairs.

We were also responsible for delivering the fit out of the SAS and Singapore lounges. At Terminal 3 similar strip out works were undertaken in the passenger lounges and across existing retail units in preparation for hotel construction. Due to the nature of the works, all activities were carried out at night to ensure that there was no disruption to passengers or airport operations. The team’s planning and delivery of works involved significant dust mitigation, ensuring that neighbouring lounges being used by passengers were unaffected.

As part of a rolling programme, Scudder and Careys Civil Engineering also worked together to deliver the upgraded external advertising signs.
