To mark Black History Month The Carey Group are celebrating our black colleagues with a series of BHM focused ‘Meet the Team’ interviews throughout the month of October.

Why do we celebrate Black History Month?

Originating in the US, Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 1987. Championed by Ghanaian activist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo during his role as Special Project Coordinator at the Greater London Council, his goal was to create an event that instilled a sense of pride and identity in black British children and challenged the Eurocentric history that was taught in schools.

Black History Month Today

Thirty-five years on Black History Month has grown into a nationwide event, celebrating the contributions of people from African and Caribbean heritage with cultural events taking place across the UK. It is also a time to fight for the equal representation of Black History and to work towards a society that is free of all forms of racism, where the dynamism that comes from diversity can flourish.

Ways to get involved:

  • Read a book by a black British author such as
    • Girl, Woman, Other, by Bernardine Evaristo
    • Black British Lives Matter, by Lenny Henry and Marcus Ryder
    • Open Water, by Caleb Azumah Nelson
    • Noughts & Crosses, by Malorie Blackman
  • Visit a Cultural Event - https://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk/listings/
  • Look out for our BHM focused 'Meet The Team' interviews throughout the month
