This year the theme for International Men’s Day is Zero Male Suicide. The suicide rate of men in the UK is 73% in comparison to 27% women* and the reasons for this are based on the false societal and personal notions placed on them. Research suggests men are less likely to communicate effectively which means they are not always putting themselves forward to get the appropriate support for their wellbeing.
While it is hardly spoken about, men are still subject to discrimination based on age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation and even parenting duties. However, a lot of these forms of discrimination are dismissed based on the preconceived role of men in society.
Even though the construction industry is male dominated, 8% of men are known to report some form of sexual discrimination and in 2017 for the first time a male worker (non – construction) won his case against his employer for discrimination due to the employer failing to award his paternity rights.
The Lighthouse Club has been delivering charitable support to the construction community since 1956, and is the only charity that provides emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.
