We’re pleased to share that Careys has secured a contract to transform the iconic Oxford Street district in central London, working alongside J Murphy & Sons Ltd in a joint venture (Murphy-Carey JV).

The five-year, £235m contract is part of Westminster City Council’s plans to improve and future-proof the Oxford Street district to deliver its vision through 36 distinct projects in the surrounding area.

These works intend to enhance the neighbourhood, cater for the expected increase in visitors when the Elizabeth Line opens, reduce congestion, provide better cycling routes, improve air quality and create green public spaces, thereby helping create amazing environments for the public and strengthening Oxford Street’s world-renowned status as a great place to live, shop, work and visit.

The first package of works will commence Q2 2020 in Ramillies Place and include:

- Introduction of flush surfaces

- Installation of additional cycle parking

- Consolidation and timed control of loading provision

- Introduction of a pedestrian and cycle zone

- Improvement of lighting

- Planting of additional trees

- Additional and improved seating

- Display of artwork on building facades and banners

Cllr Richard Beddoe, Cabinet Member for Planning and Place Shaping, said:

We are hugely ambitious for the Oxford Street District and have already set aside £150m of council capital funds to massively kick start delivery of our exciting vision. Our appointment of the Murphy-Carey joint venture team is a clear statement that we mean business and we remain fully focused on delivering the much-needed improvements that will future proof this much-loved area for generations to come. With this appointment we are taking huge strides towards turning our vision for the Oxford Street District in to exhilarating reality and we look forward to continue working with residents, businesses and everyone who has an interest in the area's success to deliver a scheme that will be the envy of the world.
