Careys undertook works as a specialist contractor on a new learning and teaching centre for Newcastle University. Our works comprise substructure reinforced concrete foundations, pile caps, construction of the ground floor slab, installation of the under-slab drainage and construction of a four-storey reinforced concrete frame that includes two reinforced concrete stair/lift cores.

The project features a 722-seat auditorium that can be sub-divided to provide two separate operational lecture theatres, in addition to a 200-seat tiered lecture theatre for collaborative ground teaching.

The tight site footprint has greatly limited our ability to store materials within the radius of the tower crane, requiring our team to implement a ‘just in time’ plan to minimise the space required.

Our team has faced multiple challenges from logistics management, challenging weather conditions and hook time issues with the site tower crane.

In addition to this, our team has overcome significant volumes of rainfall, windspeed and snow during the project, installing additional drying rooms, wheel washes, and road sweepers to prevent dirt from the site spreading outside the site boundary.

To overcome the challenges faced in utilising the tower crane provided the project’s principal contractor, we undertook a hook time analysis to determine the effectiveness and productivity of the lifting operations being carried out. To ensure we could maintain the programme, we identified that an additional crawler crane was required to prevent delays.
