Careys is proud to confirm its appointment to the London Gatwick Framework Agreement for civil engineering works, supporting the management and delivery of major capital projects.

The framework scope includes asphalt and concrete pavement construction across both the airfield and surrounding highways, alongside the installation of infrastructure to enable significant utility upgrades and the structural renewal of existing assets.

Since mobilising on site, our teams are already delivering two key projects.

Taxiway 2B Rehabilitation
The first project involves the rehabilitation of Taxiway 2B, including the breakout and replacement of approximately 10,000m³ of concrete. The works also incorporate the installation of new aeronautical ground lighting and improved drainage systems across the taxiway.

As part of this project, Careys has successfully delivered a lower-carbon concrete trial in collaboration with Heidelberg Materials and Ramboll UK. The trial validates a cement-replacement mix incorporating 20% Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) within a live operational environment.

Performance monitoring will continue throughout the summer, with the solution under consideration for full implementation next winter, subject to test outcomes. If adopted, this approach could deliver a carbon reduction of over 10% compared to current materials—equating to approximately 140 tCO₂e—supporting London Gatwick’s Construction Sustainability Strategy.

Instrument Landing System (ILS) Replacement
Our second project supports the replacement of London Gatwick’s Instrument Landing System (ILS)—a critical precision approach system that provides pilots with both vertical and horizontal guidance during landing.

Careys’ scope includes the installation of new plinths and foundations, construction of ducting and chambers for electrical systems, and the relocation of chain-link fencing alongside the installation of crash barriers. These works are essential to maintaining safe and efficient runway operations.
