Vauxhall Plant, Luton

Careys were awarded a package of works at Vauxhall’s van plant as principal contractor on the bespoke design and build contract to construct multiple car parks, including ground reconfiguration, remodelling, demolition, asbestos removal and enabling works in addition to the subsequent drainage works within an area the equivalent of over eight football pitches.

Principal Contractor

Careys

Mudflats with patches of green seaweed, industrial buildings and white towers in distance under cloudy sky.

The total area of our works was 59,000m2, and in reconfiguring the site, we were appointed to demolish an existing building to enable development of a new car park. A previously demolished building was also present on-site, the basement of which we converted into an underground staff car park, whilst the building’s ground floor level became a storage area for Vauxhall’s vans.

In delivering this aspect of the works large quantities of asbestos were discovered as part of our pre-construction surveys. Consequently, we were contracted to deliver the asbestos removal works.

Bespoke methodologies and a collaborative approach ensure Vauxhall’s operations remain unaffected on the live site

The drainage works included installation of water storage tanks and construction of segways to allow the water to flow into the porous chalk ground. Additionally, we installed a new gatehouse and entrance way to the site for all staff.

The project was unique, as the bespoke contract required specific procedures and permits to authorise work on a Vauxhall plant. As part of the methodology, security fencing was erected to segregate our works from the plant’s staff and minimise disruption and ensured the safe removal of services through hand digging and vacuum excavation methods.
