The specific gas works comprised:

  • Laying and commissioning low pressure (LP) main and 1 non-domestic LP service and
  • 5 future nondomestic LP services, including 6 meter manifold
  • Cutting in new 250mm tee onto an existing 250mm PE LP cadent main, lay 98m X
  • 250mm PE and 5m X8 inch ST (steel) main, pipe isolation valve and inlet isolation valve
  • Terminating with 4 inch ECV (Emergency Control Valve) internally including enhancement and protective works
  • Sourcing and installing a MAM (Meter Asset Manager) to provide the meter

A number of challenges arose during the works. A prime example was realisation that the core in the basement wall was incorrect. This was addressed through a redesign of the fabrication size passing through the core, approved under a variation through Careys’ in-house Utility Delivery Manager and Cadent.

The gas main was installed in two separate phases, PH1 from the live cadent main in South Africa Road into site, and PH2 from the site boundary into the basement. The original information issued proved to be incorrect, setting out detail for the termination of the main in PH1 at the site entrance. As a result, the main had been installed outside of the easement which was not Gateway Central’s land. With the main now live, the team addressed the issue via application for a design deviation and RO (Routine Operation) to move the live main back into the easement alignment. This was agreed prior to PH2 commencing.

The main installed on site (8m) was subsequently moved into the agreed alignment and then extended through PH2 at the same time. This unusual variation was swiftly agreed, largely based upon Careys’ established and trusted relationship and partnership with the provider (Cadent).

The solution culminated in significant cost savings for the client as a typical 16-18 week lead time for these alterations was avoided; the Careys team were able to re-design, seek approvals and mobilise to site in only 10 days, to carry out these essential diversion works.
