Careys at Wimbledon - Centre Court

Since 2017, Careys has undertaken a number of packages of work at Wimbledon as part of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s (AELTC) development masterplan. In May, our team successfully handed over the Centre Court project ahead of the 2022 event, having also recently handed over the project at AELTC Indoor Tennis Centre on Somerset Road.

The Championships 2022 celebrated 100 years of Centre Court in its current location at Church Road in Wimbledon and the All England Club commissioned a package of improvements to commemorate this milestone. Careys was appointed as principal contractor under a JCT Design and Build contract to undertake the improvement and refurbishment of the Centre Court lower bowl and the court surround.

The 30-week programme started in autumn 2021 and works involved elements of demolition, refurbishment, civil and structural works, as well as mechanical and electrical and fitout works. It was essential that the works retained the ‘look and feel’ of the historic Centre Court, for example, creating 1922-style balustrading and matching our new concrete finishes to the existing courtside balustrading. The works included:

  • Installation and/or modification of scoreboards and mini scoreboards to minimise restricted lines of sight
  • Refurbishment of and modifications to commentary boxes
  • Demolition and reconstruction to a new commentary box
  • New 1922 balustrade using UHPC concrete made with moulds taken on site to match existing balustrade
  • Modifications and improvements to the photographers’ pits
  • Replacement of the court screens and camera platform
