Gary Walsh

Commercial Director

I believe that consistency of approach is key in leadership. People need certainty and as a leader it is important to make firm decisions, to ask the right questions, and to show a persistence to not giving up – to not let the challenges we face overrule us. Leadership is a resilience to finding a way through, to always finding that third alternative. My role as a leader is to seek solutions that ensure win-wins for everybody - and most importantly that our teams, clients and partners feel heard.

What I enjoy most about working at Careys is the interaction of working with people who have a common goal of trying to achieve something for themselves, and for each other. At Careys we all strive for something that’s bigger than us as individuals, without losing the sense of connectedness as we continue to grow as an organisation.

My role is to support the group strategy in bringing a consistent approach to Careys commercial and contractual interactions with our partners of choice, providing business agility for effective change and decisions that are ultimately reflected in the commercial impact of the project lifecycle. It’s important that our clients can see our focus on ‘what we leave behind’ – a lasting relationship built on trust, honesty and integrity. I always take a pragmatic view on the longer-term commercial drivers on our projects – and to make sure we never lose sight of that.

I started my surveying career when I was 18 for Civil Engineering firm Mowlam, then for Fairclough civil engineering (later merged to become AMEC civil engineering) and worked on major infrastructure projects such as the Limehouse Link Tunnel and A46 Leicester Weston bypass. I then worked with my father for 15 years within our own business in the Demolition and recycling sector in London before returning to Ireland. I worked for various civil engineering companies before joining Careys as an Estimator 9 years ago for our demolition business where I enjoyed career highlights on securing our complex projects at Selfridges and the American Embassy.
